Supporting Right Brain Readers

Students, families and educational staff benefit from knowing how to support right brain readers.

The traditional methods of sounding words out aren’t successful for these students due to the way their brain processes written language, which Dr. Zvia Breznitz has termed ‘asynchrony phenomenon’.

We do them a disservice if we expect them to learn in the traditional way.

I created these 12 images to explain how to support RB readers:

Right Brain Reading Work Task Tracking sheet

Use this tracking sheet to help students know what task they are working on during their session with you.

  • This helps them keep track of how many more rounds they have to complete when doing the Initial Learning Stages of Match, Select and Read.

  •  The instructor can number which activities the student will be working on during their session in the blank boxes beside the images.

  •  All of the activities in the left column are done with the instructor.

  •  All of the activities in the center column are done independently, with words that the student is already familiar with.

  •  The activities in the right column are varied – some require support and some can be done independently. 

Laminate this sheet and use a dry wipe marker to keep track of the learning tasks for the session.
